India, Oct. 4 -- Skywatchers across Canada have an opportunity to observe Saturn at one of its best points of the year as the ringed planet reaches opposition on October 4, 2026. During opposition, Earth moves between the Sun and Saturn, placing the planet opposite the Sun in Earth's sky.

The alignment makes Saturn visible for much of the night and provides a particularly good opportunity for telescope users to observe its rings and some of its moons. NASA has listed October 4 among the major skywatching highlights for October 2026.

There is also another interesting phenomenon to watch for: the Seeliger effect, or opposition surge, which can increase the apparent brightness of Saturn's rings around opposition.
