India, June 27 -- In June 2026, fed-up residents in East Sussex used an angle grinder to cut the padlocks off a gated-and-welded entrance to West Beach in Newhaven. The beach has been closed to the public by its French owners since 2008. Driven by a summer heatwave with temperatures soaring past 30degC, more than 100 locals stormed the sand to reclaim the area's only sandy beach.
