India, Aug. 26 -- Pennsylvania measles deaths have marked a major setback in the fight against the highly contagious virus, with two unvaccinated Lancaster County residents dying after contracting measles. The fatalities are the first measles-associated deaths in Pennsylvania in 35 years and the first reported in the US in 2026.

The deaths come as the US faces its worst measles outbreak in decades. The CDC reported 2,777 confirmed cases across 47 jurisdictions as of August 20, already surpassing the country's full-year 2025 total of 2,289 cases.
