India, Oct. 6 -- The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has introduced a revised Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for updating names on Aadhaar. The new process, issued on September 18, 2026, replaces the earlier 2021 procedure and separates name updates into categories such as minor corrections, data-entry errors, marriage or divorce-related changes and major name changes.

The new rules also bring stricter verification for supporting documents, affidavits, and Gazette notifications. Name changes are currently handled at Aadhaar Enrolment Centres or Aadhaar Seva Kendras rather than through the online name-update facility.
