India, June 26 -- Afghanistan is expected to observe Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram, on Friday, June 26, 2026, marking one of the most important occasions in the Islamic calendar. However, unlike previous years, Ashura is no longer recognised as a national public holiday under the current Taliban administration. Under the former Afghan government, Ashura was an official holiday during which schools, universities and government offices remained closed across the country. Today, most public institutions and businesses generally continue normal operations, although religious gatherings and commemorative events are still expected in several provinces.
