India, Aug. 5 -- Voters in Ferndale, Michigan, described differing motivations sharply as they cast ballots on Tuesday in a closely watched Democratic Senate primary between progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed and moderate rival Haley Stevens, with foreign policy, immigration enforcement and party electability all cited as decisive factors.

Mark Foster told US broadcaster NBC News that his support for El-Sayed rested largely on the candidate's outspoken position on the conflict in Gaza, describing him as a defender of Palestine. Foster said the primary marked a rare moment of genuine enthusiasm at the ballot box, telling the broadcaster, "This is the first time that I've actually gotten to vote for a candidate that excites me."
