India, Sept. 1 -- Siddhesh Lad has been named Mumbai's captain for the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy season, taking over from Shardul Thakur. The Mumbai Cricket Association's senior selection committee has made the change primarily to manage Thakur's workload, particularly his bowling responsibilities. Lad had already led the side last season when Thakur was unavailable because of injury.

Thakur remains an important part of Mumbai's plans, but the selectors want to avoid putting the additional responsibility of captaincy on the all-rounder. Lad will now lead Mumbai for a second straight season, with the team set to begin its Ranji Trophy campaign against Chandigarh on October 11 and play 10 league matches.
