May Day History

The origins of May Day are linked to the Haymarket Affair in Chicago. On 1st May, 1889, over 400,000 workers held a peaceful protest at the Haymarket Square in Chicago. Their aim was to protest for an eight-hour workday. Unfortunately, things turned violent, and some of the labour workers were killed by the city's police. The victims were called the 'Haymarket Martyrs'.
