India, Oct. 1 -- Rui Pinto, the whistleblower whose confidential document leaks triggered the Premier League's financial investigation into Manchester City, has had his protected witness status officially revoked by Portuguese authorities.

The 37-year-old hacker, who founded the website Football Leaks, had been under state protection since 2020 after granting police access to millions of encrypted files.

However, Portuguese law enforcement has now determined that the current threat to his personal safety is low, formally ending his security detail.

The decision has sparked widespread concern, arriving just days after the Premier League found Manchester City guilty of 114 financial charges.
