India, July 29 -- Macklin Celebrini has secured a massive payday after the San Jose Sharks announced a five-year, $94 million contract extension for the young centre on Wednesday. The deal carries an average annual value of $18.8 million and will come into effect from the 2027-28 NHL season, after Celebrini completes the final year of his entry-level contract.

The extension will make Celebrini the highest-paid player in NHL history by annual salary once it begins. His $18.8 million cap hit will surpass Leo Carlsson's current benchmark of $18 million per season, which he received after the Anaheim Ducks matched the Philadelphia Flyers' offer sheet earlier this month.
