India, May 7 -- Israel has confirmed a major airstrike in Beirut that killed senior Hezbollah commander Ahmed Ghaleb Balout. The targeted operation hit southern Beirut, a known Hezbollah stronghold, and immediately increased tensions across the Israel-Lebanon border.

The strike comes at a sensitive moment when both sides are already engaged in frequent cross-border exchanges. The Israeli military said it carried out the attack based on intelligence inputs and targeted Balout due to his alleged operational role in attacks against Israeli forces.

The development has raised fears of further escalation, as Beirut had not seen a strike of this scale in weeks.
