India, Aug. 22 -- An earthquake of magnitude 5.9 shook southern Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, at just past 2 a.m. local time on August 23, causing strong shaking to be felt throughout portions of the Kanto region, including Tokyo. The Japanese earthquake detection system released emergency alerts as the shaking was felt in multiple prefectures while reports from early on suggested an intensity level of 5 on the lower end of the Japanese Shindo scale.
