India, Aug. 20 -- The US Food and Drug Administration has classified a recall of frozen GreenWise organic berries sold at Publix as a Class I event, its most serious risk designation, after the products were linked to 12 confirmed E. coli infections across Florida and Georgia, four of which required hospitalisation.

The upgrade, issued on Tuesday, applies to four GreenWise-branded frozen berry products, Organic Whole Blueberries and Organic Whole Mixed Berries, in both 10-ounce and 48-ounce packages.

According to the FDA, a Class I classification signifies "a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death."
