India, Sept. 26 -- Efforts to contain the second-largest Ebola outbreak on record in the Democratic Republic of Congo are being severely hampered by a massive shortfall in contact tracing, the head of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has warned.

Speaking on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Director-General Dr Jean Kaseya revealed that the vast majority of new infections are occurring among individuals entirely unknown to health authorities.

The growing crisis indicates that the lethal virus is spreading undetected through communities, significantly outpacing the international surveillance and response apparatus tasked with bringing the epidemic under control.
