India, Aug. 3 -- The Assam government has begun distributing the first instalment of interim financial assistance to families affected by the recent floods. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma released the first tranche from Dibrugarh as the state continues relief and rehabilitation efforts in the worst hit districts.

The first phase of assistance is being provided to families whose homes were severely damaged by the floods. Eligible households in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat districts will receive around Rs 75,000 as interim relief, including an initial payment of Rs 15,000 under one component of the relief package.
