India, Sept. 22 -- The 20th Asian Games are underway in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4, 2026, marking the third time the country has hosted the continental sporting spectacle after Tokyo in 1958 and Hiroshima in 1994. The Asian Games began in New Delhi in 1951, with India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru supporting the event as a way to strengthen ties among Asian nations in the aftermath of World War II. This year's edition features 469 medal events across 43 sports and 71 disciplines, with around 500 Indian athletes competing for honours. India had a record-breaking campaign at Hangzhou 2023, winning 106 medals, including 28 golds, 38 silvers and 40 bronzes, to finish fourth in the standings.
