India, Sept. 28 -- The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has deferred its proposed three-day nationwide bank strike scheduled for September 28-30 after the Indian Banks' Association (IBA) gave assurances on several demands raised by bank employees.

The development means bank branches will continue normal operations during the period for which the strike had been announced. The timing is significant as the proposed agitation coincided with the half-yearly closing of banks.

Why Was The Bank Strike Deferred?

The decision followed discussions between the UFBU and IBA on the unions' pending demands. A key issue is the demand for a five-day working week, under which Saturdays and Sundays would become weekly holidays for bank employees.
