India, May 17 -- Adhik Maas 2026 has officially begun. And this auspicious month that only occurs once in three years, holds religious and astronomical significance in the Hindu lunar calendar.

History

Adhik Maas, also known as Purushottam Maas, used to be known as Mal Maas in ancient times. This is because, unlike the other 12 months in the Hindu lunar calendar, it didn't have any assigned deity. As a result, it would frequently get shunned.

But according to the Padma Purana, Lord Vishnu took pity on its plight and accepted the month as his own. He bestowed the name of Purushottam Maas, naming it after his Purushottam avatar (form).
