India, Aug. 25 -- A devastating crash on the A66 near Middlesbrough has widened into a major criminal investigation, with police arresting 12 people over alleged activity linked to the events that led to the collision. Seven people died in the crash, including two Cleveland Police officers who were travelling in a marked armed response vehicle.

The latest investigation has uncovered allegations involving dangerous driving, cloned number plates, weapons, drugs and organised crime. Police say a Volkswagen Passat involved in the fatal crash had been linked to earlier incidents involving another vehicle, while four of the five people inside the Passat had previous convictions.
