India, July 7 -- Padma Shri awardee Girish Bharadwaj, popularly known as the 'Bridge Man of India,' has passed away at the age of 76, marking the end of an extraordinary career dedicated to improving rural connectivity across the country.

A mechanical engineer by training, Girish Bharadwaj earned national recognition for designing and building more than 40 low-cost suspension bridges that connected remote villages with schools, hospitals and markets.

His innovative engineering solutions transformed countless lives and earned him one of India's highest civilian honours.
