Jammu, April 8 -- Russia and China vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution seeking the reopening of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, blocking its adoption despite majority support.

The 15-member United Nations Security Council voted on the resolution proposed by Bahrain, with 11 members voting in favour, two against and two abstaining.

The resolution failed to pass after vetoes by permanent members Russia and China, both of whom opposed the move to reopen the key maritime route.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global chokepoint through which nearly one-fifth of the world's oil supply passes, making its status central to international energy security and trade.
