India, Oct. 2 -- The Animal Husbandry Department (AHD), with support from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India, seized 140 metal spiked bits allegedly being used to control horses engaged in tourist rides and hauling goods in Katra and Shiv Khori, officials said on Thursday.Geographic Reference

The spiked, or "thorn" bits, are designed to inflict pain and cause injuries to the sensitive gums and lips of horses. The confiscated devices were replaced with smooth, painless bits, they said.

The seizure was made during an awareness-cum-enforcement drive at the Veterinary Dispensary in Katra, officials said.
