New Delhi, April 13 -- President of India Droupadi Murmu on Monday paid homage to the freedom fighters who were killed in the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, saying the nation will always remain grateful for their sacrifice.

In a post on X in Hindi, she expressed confidence that their spirit of patriotism will continue to inspire people to serve the nation with dedication and loyalty.

The massacre took place on this day in 1919 at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, when British forces opened fire without provocation on hundreds of peaceful protesters opposing the Rowlatt Act.

Murmu said the incident awakened national consciousness and strengthened the resolve for freedom, while paying her humble tribute to the martyrs.
