Nigeria, Aug. 17 -- President Bola Tinubu has congratulated former military Head of State, retired Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, on his 85th birthday, describing him as an outstanding Nigerian leader whose legacy remains significant.

Tinubu said Babangida's distinguished military career culminated in his emergence as Nigeria's leader following the 1985 coup.

The President conveyed his message in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga, on Monday in Abuja.

Tinubu said Babangida had shaped Nigeria in significant ways, leaving lasting marks on the country's political, economic and geographical development.
