Bangladesh, July 15 -- The United States government has so far refunded $81 billion in tariffs this fiscal year after the Supreme Court ruled that former President Donald Trump's sweeping tariff policy was illegal.

According to fresh Treasury Department data released this week, the refund amount has jumped sharply from only $5 billion during the same period last year. Most of these payments were made in May and June. Officials say the total amount to be refunded could eventually cross $160 billion.

The refunds follow the Supreme Court's landmark ruling on 20 February 2026, which declared that Trump had exceeded his authority by imposing broad tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
