Bangladesh, May 14 -- Processed and ultra-processed foods, including packaged snacks and processed meats, are among the main contributors to excessive salt consumption in Bangladesh, experts said at a public awareness seminar on Wednesday.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that high salt intake causes nearly 1.7 million deaths globally each year. In Bangladesh, diets high in sodium are linked to around 24,000 deaths annually.

The seminar was held to mark Salt Awareness Week 2026, observed worldwide from May 11 to 17 under the slogan, "Let's reduce salt in our food together."
