Bangladesh, Aug. 3 -- Leader of the Opposition and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman on Sunday accused the government of abandoning its promises to the people and following the path of fascism, warning that a failure to resolve political disputes in parliament could push the opposition back onto the streets.

"We do not want to see the government as deceptive; we want it to honour the commitments it made to the people," he said, speaking at a discussion organised by the Bangladesh Labour Party at the National Press Club in Dhaka to mark the second anniversary of the July mass uprising.

"If parliament fails to resolve the issues, the streets will be our destination," he added. "An exact copy" of the past regime
