Bangladesh, June 30 -- Barrister MA Salam, Chairman of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, has pledged to free the Red Crescent from what he described as 17 years of fascist control and transform it into a more welfare-oriented institution serving the people.

He said the Red Crescent would become a shining example of humanity and that efforts would be made to strengthen the organization and accelerate the government's humanitarian activities.

He made these remarks while visiting the Sylhet Unit office at 1:00 p.m. on Monday and exchanging views with members of the unit executive committee, officers and employees,
