First day of Muharram in J&K on Wednesday: Grand Mufti
India, June 15 -- The month of Muharram-ul-Haram, marking the beginning of the Islamic New Year, will commence in Jammu and Kashmir from Wednesday, June 17, 2026, as announced by the Grand Mufti of Jammu and Kashmir, Nasir-ul-Islam Farooqi, here on Monday.
While speaking to the news agency KNO, the Grand Mufti said that no authentic or credible reports of crescent moon sighting were received from any part of the Union Territory on Monday evening. "In view of this, the first day of Muharram-ul-Haram will be observed on June 17, Wednesday," he said.
He further extended greetings to the Muslim Ummah on the advent of the Islamic New Year, praying for peace, prosperity and communal harmony across Jammu and Kashmir and beyond.
