The other day, I came across a report that said the Moon is moving away from Earth.

The change is tiny, only a few centimeters a year. Nobody looking up at the night sky would notice it.

The Moon still hangs above us, tides continue to rise and fall, and Earth and its companion remain bound together.

Time, however, has a way of turning small changes into large ones. Given enough centuries, even a few centimeters become a meaningful distance.

The discovery drew me in, and the remarkable slowness of the process kept me thinking about it.

Life teaches us to pay attention to dramatic moments. We remember elections, wars, weddings, funerals, births, departures, and reunions.
