I have often wondered why someone else's happiness can unsettle us, even when the person is someone we love.

A friend gets the job we wanted, a sibling reaches a milestone we have been waiting for, or someone our age moves abroad, buys a house or builds the life we imagined for ourselves.

We congratulate them, mean it, and still feel a small ache somewhere inside.

I have come to think that jealousy usually tells us less about the person we envy than about the life we believe we should already have.
