India, Oct. 16 -- The Ladakh administration on Friday announced the creation of Sankoo as the Union Territory's eighth district, fulfilling a long-standing demand of the people of the Kargil region.

Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena approved the decision and announced it on X, describing it as a step towards fulfilling the aspirations of the people.

"In line with the 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas' vision of Hon'ble PM Shri Narendra Modi ji and Hon'ble HM Shri Amit Shah ji, I am pleased to announce the creation of Sankoo district!" Saxena said.
