Srinagar, July 29 -- Srinagar- In a major milestone for higher education in Jammu and Kashmir, the University of Kashmir (KU) has been granted the prestigious Category-I status by the University Grants Commission (UGC), making it eligible for enhanced academic, administrative, and financial autonomy under the UGC (Categorisation of Universities for Grant of Graded Autonomy) Regulations, 2018.

The recognition was approved during the UGC's 598th Commission meeting held on July 6, 2026, and communicated through an official letter issued by UGC Secretary Prof. Shyama Rath.
