During my 19 years as a teacher in Budgam and as an academic monitor, I have worked in nearly 30 schools. That experience has given me a close view of the education system from many angles.

One issue stands out more than any other: the physical and mental health of teachers.

Almost every school I have visited includes educators struggling with health challenges.

Diabetes, obesity, stress, anxiety and exhaustion have become common features of school life. Many schools lack playgrounds or open spaces where teachers can walk, exercise or spend time outdoors.

A teacher often spends the entire day inside classrooms and offices, moving from one lesson to the next.
