That distinction explains why his death reaches far beyond the campus he founded in Naik Bagh, Nowgam.
Kashmir has lost an educator whose life challenged one of modern education's strongest assumptions: money builds schools.
His work showed that trust builds them first.
My mind never goes to the present-day FEI School when I think of him. It returns to 1988, when the institution opened inside a converted two-room cowshed.
Four students enrolled during its first year, seven came the next.
Few looking at a campus serving nearly 1,500 students could imagine those beginnings.
