Srinagar, Sept. 1 -- Kashmir's homestay boom is bringing tourism into ordinary homes, which can open a useful new source of income for rural families.

The government has registered more than 1,600 homestays in Kashmir Division and is encouraging visitors to explore places beyond the established tourist spots.

A spare room can bring money into a household, while local food, transport and small services can benefit from the visitors who stay there.

The appeal is simple, especially in villages where families have long combined farming, housing and small businesses within the same household economy.
