A retired officer walks into a lawyer's chamber holding a charge-sheet that names events from 2007.

He has been out of office for years, and assumes, as most people assume, that retirement closes the door behind him.

The lawyer's first job is to explain that retirement does not automatically close the case.

The answer lies in a law few people outside the courts know well: the Jammu and Kashmir Prevention of Corruption Act, Svt. 2006.

Its wording and history are different from the Central law, and so are some of the answers it gives.
