Srinagar, July 23 -- Police detained more than 1,000 suspects across Kashmir in a massive anti-terror crackdown following the killing of a local police head constable in a terrorist attack in Anantnag on Wednesday.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police launched coordinated operations across several districts of the Valley to trace the assailant who shot dead Head Constable Ashiq Hussain at Lal Chowk in Anantnag while he was on Amarnath Yatra security duty.

According to officials, more than 1,000 suspected overground workers (OGWs) linked to terrorist outfits were rounded up for questioning across six districts, including nearly 700 in Srinagar alone.

The IANS news agency, however, reported that the number of those detained was around 3,500.
