Dhaka, April 28 -- Police have identified the man shot dead in Dhaka's New Market area as "top criminal" Khandaker Naim Ahmed Titon.

After the incident on Tuesday evening, police said, "From different sources, we have initially learned that the deceased is top criminal Titon. We are trying to know more," bdnews24.com reports.

Titon was named in the list of 23 top criminals published in 2001 during the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami coalition government.

His brother-in-law Sanjidul Islam Emon was also put on the list.

Both were involved in the Harish-Joseph criminal group of Mohammadpur. Titon carried out his activities in Dhanmondi and Hazaribagh.
