Dhaka, June 1 -- The Kali Temple of the Pirojpur Municipal Crematorium was set on fire and vandalised, with its donation box and some items used for cremation stolen, stirring resentment in the area.

Pirojpur Sadar Police chief Mohammad Shariful Islam suspects the incident took place between 3am and 3:30am on Monday, bdnews24.com reports.

Municipal Crematorium Committee President Sunil Chakraborty said he went to the spot and found the idol of Shiva adjacent to the temple vandalised.

Some parts of the broken idol were burnt down, he said, adding that the gate of the crematorium was broken too.

The miscreants also took away several tools used for cremation, said Sunil.
