New Delhi, Aug. 17 -- KOLKATA - On 10 November 1991, South Africa played their first international match in more than two decades at Eden Gardens, against India, in front of a crowd estimated at 90,000. Clive Rice, 41 years old and captaining a country returning from sporting isolation, later said the noise was the loudest he had heard on a cricket field. South Africa made 177 for 8. India chased it down with 38 balls to spare.

Thirty-four years later, on the same ground, South Africa bowled India out for 93 and won a Test match by 30 runs. Two weeks after that, in Guwahati, they won by 408 runs, the heaviest defeat India have suffered in Test cricket measured in runs.
