MILAN, July 30 -- Arsenal had a case. So did Chelsea. John Stones heard both of them out, and then chose a flight to Milan instead.

The England centre-back landed in Italy on Wednesday to begin his medical at Inter Milan, formalising a two-year free transfer from Manchester City that ran counter to what two Premier League clubs had spent the past fortnight trying to arrange. Stones left the Etihad without a fee, his contract having expired at the end of the 2025-26 season. The deal runs through June 2028, enough runway for the 32-year-old to argue that his best defending is not yet behind him.
