PETERSBURG, Aug. 15 -- Two days before classes were set to begin, five people were shot near the dormitories at Virginia State University early Saturday morning as campus police and at least four other law enforcement agencies launched an investigation into what the university described as a shooting involving "multiple suspects."

The gunfire broke out near the Quad Annexes, a residential complex on VSU's campus in Chesterfield County, during the early hours of August 15. Five victims were found in the aftermath. One person, initially listed with life-threatening injuries, had been upgraded to critical condition by the time officials made a public statement.
