His departure clears the way for Nasimul Gani, the current Cabinet Secretary and former Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, to assume the presidency in a transition that sources familiar with the appointment describe as directly orchestrated by Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence and military establishment.
