Tanzania, July 30 -- Dar es Salaam. Tanzania is stepping up efforts to reduce reliance on cash as digital payment transactions continue to surge, with the Bank of Tanzania (BoT) urging sustained public awareness and financial education to help consumers and businesses confidently adopt electronic payment systems as the country moves towards a cash-lite economy.

As part of the transition, the government has expanded mandatory electronic payments across a wide range of sectors under the Electronic Transactions (Mandatory Electronic Payments for Specified Transactions) Regulations, 2026, beginning July 2026.
