EU and AFD sign Sh37.5 billion agreement to improve water and sanitation services in Mwanza
Tanzania, June 20 -- Mwanza. The European Union (EU), in partnership with the French Development Agency (AFD), has signed a grant agreement worth Euro 12.5 million (about Sh37.5 billion) to finance the second phase of the Lake Victoria Water and Sanitation Project (LVWATSAN II) in Mwanza.
The signing ceremony took place on June 19, 2026, at the Butimba water source and treatment plant, marking one year since the facility was inaugurated. The plant currently produces 44,000 cubic metres of clean water per day.
Speaking at the event, AFD Regional Director, Jean Francois, said the agreement represents more than financial support, describing it as a long-term commitment by Team Europe to improving the lives of people in Mwanza.
