India, July 22 -- A police head constable was shot dead after suspected terrorists opened fire on a police party in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district on Wednesday, officials said.

The attack took place at around 12:30 pm near Lal Chowk in Anantnag town. The police personnel were deployed for security duties related to the ongoing Amarnath Yatra when they came under fire.

The slain policeman has been identified as Head Constable Aashiq Hussain Qureshi, 35. He was rushed to the Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag, where doctors declared him brought dead.

The Resistance Front (TRF), believed to be a proxy of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), has claimed responsibility for the attack through a post on social media.
