New Delhi, July 15 -- Amazon Web Services (AWS) on Wednesday announced a new data centre as part of the expansion of its Hyderabad cloud region, reinforcing its cloud infrastructure investments in India amid rising demand for AI and cloud services.

The development forms part of Amazon's previously announced plan to invest more than $21 billion in cloud infrastructure across India between 2026 and 2030, making it one of the largest global investments in the country's AI and cloud ecosystem. The cloud commitment is included within Amazon's broader $48 billion investment roadmap for India announced earlier this year.

The foundation stone was laid in the presence of Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy at Bharat Future City.

AWS said the investment will expand data centre capacity across its Hyderabad and Mumbai regions, providing startups, enterprises and government organisations with greater access to AI infrastructure, including custom AI chips, managed AI services, cloud computing capabilities and developer tools.

"Since we launched AWS infrastructure in Hyderabad back in 2022, we have deepened our investment and commitment to build sustainable cloud data centre operations in Telangana to help meet the growing demands of Digital India and the India AI Mission," said Anurag Khilnani, Director of Data Centre Delivery at AWS.

By the end of 2025, Amazon had invested more than $1.3 billion in cloud infrastructure in the AWS Hyderabad Region.

The announcement comes amid an intense race among global hyperscalers to expand AI-ready data centre capacity in India as enterprise AI adoption accelerates. Amazon's latest investment follows similar infrastructure expansion plans by Microsoft, Google Cloud and Oracle, all of which are strengthening their cloud footprint to support generative AI workloads and digital transformation initiatives.

Industry estimates project India's installed data centre capacity to grow from around 1.5 GW today to nearly 6.5 GW by 2030, supported by more than $120 billion in planned investments, as demand for AI computing, cloud services and digital public infrastructure continues to rise.

Alongside infrastructure expansion, AWS is also investing in workforce development. The company said its Amazon Data Centre Skilling Program has trained 250 students in Telangana over the past four years in data centre operations, with 110 graduates hired into AWS's Data Centre Operations team.

More broadly, AWS said it has trained over 10 million people in India in cloud skills since 2017 through initiatives including AWS Skill Builder, AWS Educate and AWS re/Start.

Telangana IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu said the investment reinforces the state's ambition to become India's AI and cloud capital, adding that Hyderabad is emerging as a key hub for global digital infrastructure supported by policy, talent and reliable power availability.

The latest expansion further strengthens Hyderabad's position as one of India's largest hyperscale data centre hubs, alongside Mumbai and Chennai, as cloud providers continue building the infrastructure required to support the country's next phase of AI-led growth.
