India, Sept. 17 -- New Zealand posted a merchandise trade deficit of NZ$1.349 billion in August, Statistics New Zealand said on Friday.

That beat expectations for a shortfall of NZ$1.775 billion following the downwardly revised NZ$2.118 billion deficit in July (originally NZ$1.949 billion).

Exports were worth NZ$6.66 billion, down from the downwardly revised NZ$7.22 billion in the previous month (originally NZ$7.39 billion).
