India, Oct. 14 -- Mastodon have announced a special vinyl edition of their latest album, Marrow Deep, featuring dust made from real fossilized mastodon teeth.
The limited release was created with Loma Vista Recordings, Waxworks Records and the University of Georgia's geology department.
The band received a bag of mastodon teeth as a gift more than 20 years ago. Inspired by the album's title and themes, bassist and vocalist Troy Sanders proposed incorporating the fossils into the records.
The university's geology department helped grind the fossils into fine particles to avoid affecting sound quality. Mastodon members personally sprinkled the fossil dust onto the platters during the pressing process.
